What’s been said before shan’t be repeated. With a reprise of previous glorious hit parade wonders showered upon a most fortunate listening public (aka: the unwashed masses,) I don’t need to bend over any which way to explain just how seriously listenable this playlist is. Instead, there are questions inquiring minds need answered ...

... Is The Son of P.M. the founding father of that Thai rock dynasty (sort of like “I’m my own grandpa”?) Who is this talented and notorious “anonymous” that pops up not infrequently and, seemingly, from every corner of the globe? Is Maria Muldaur a Jehovah’s Witness (or “was” when posed on a 1960’s album cover proffering a copy of The Watchtower?) No reason. Just wondering. Is there any musical genre Rhiannon Giddens (here with Our Native Daughters) cannot sing perfectly? Blues, jazz, early music, bluegrass, Italian folk music…seemingly everything? Is George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog” deserving of a nomination for my next playlist of novelty, notable and just plain strange tunes? And is Bollywoood’s Shailendra Singh’s film music follow-up not a near perfect segue? Where did Crown Prince Waterford’s royal title come from and how come with decades of following the blues scene, I’d never heard of him? Are all Germans as funky as Monsieur Leroc (of course not, though I was surprised to learn of the group’s leader’s ethnic background)? Could there be a more comfortable end to such a run as this than Bobby Moore singing “Come Back Baby” (which I don’t believe was stolen by Mick Jagger)? Once you’ve discovered the answers to these questions (or not), you can stop cogitating, lean back, and be thankful for the accompaniments as well: Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Junior Wells, Little Walter, Etta James, Solomon Burke…an early Christmas gift!
It's Bobby Moore time! |
